Why These Four?
Four traditional oils. Each chosen with purpose.
Firefly isn't built around long ingredient lists or whatever ingredient happens to be trending. We begin with a small group of traditional fats and oils, chosen because each brings something valuable to the products we make.
You'll find them used in different ways across our soaps, shampoo bars, balms and other formulations. Not every product contains all four but when an ingredient is there, it has a reason to be.
TALLOW — The Star of the Show
Tallow is where Firefly begins. We know what's in our tallow because we make it.
Naturally Fatty Acid Rich — Tallow contains stearic, palmitic and oleic fatty acids that give it its rich, substantial character.
Skin-Loving Feel — Its unique fatty acid profile creates the creamy, comforting feel that makes tallow-based products so distinctive.
Incredibly Versatile — In soap, it contributes hardness and creamy lather. In leave-on products, it creates the rich, nourishing base we love.
Made By Us — We source grass-fed beef fat from regeneratively raised cattle and slowly render it ourselves in small batches.
CASTOR OIL — The Little Powerhouse
It's one of those simple, traditional ingredients that earns its place by doing a particular job exceptionally well.
Naturally Unique — Castor oil is unusually rich in ricinoleic acid, giving it properties quite different from most other plant oils.
Lather Maker — In our soaps, it helps create and stabilize that abundant, creamy lather.
Conditioning — Adds richness and conditioning qualities to a formulation rather than simply contributing cleansing power.
A Little Goes a Long Way — Castor oil doesn't need to dominate a formula to make a noticeable difference.
COCONUT OIL — The Hard Worker
Coconut oil brings something different to the table. We use it intentionally and in balance with the other ingredients around it.
Naturally Fatty Acid Rich — Coconut oil is particularly rich in lauric and myristic fatty acids.
Cleans + Lathers — In soap formulations, it contributes effective cleansing and those big, satisfying bubbles.
Adds Structure — It helps create a firmer, more durable bar that holds up well with use.
More Than Soap — Depending on the formulation, coconut oil can serve different purposes across handcrafted skincare.
OLIVE OIL — The Gentle Workhorse
Olive oil isn't flashy and that's exactly why we love it. It's a simple, hardworking ingredient with a very good reason for being there.
Oleic Acid Rich — Olive oil is naturally abundant in oleic acid, giving it a rich, conditioning character.
Soft + Conditioning — Helps bring softness and balance to the products in which we use it.
Beautifully Versatile — Olive oil can play a role in both wash-off and leave-on formulations, depending on what we're creating.
Simple + Time-Tested — People have used olive oil in traditional skincare and soapmaking for generations.
